The Ancient & Recent tour operator offers a tour that will allow all visitors to experience the Colosseum like never before, with multimedia and multi-sensory immersion and led by an authorized guide. Tourists can live the history of the ancient world wearing Samsung Gear VR glasses that use a virtual realitysystem based on multilingual software, and incorporates an animated and interactive 3D historical reconstruction.
Visitors will be able to walk ‘live’ in the square admiring the majestic statue of Nero, the Meta Sudans, the Temple of Rome and Venus, and inside the arena between the roar of fierce lions and the battle of gladiators. A multilingual narrative voice coupled with epic background music will accompany the experience. The contents were verified by professor Filippo Coarelli.
The full immersion tour is over 3 hours in duration and brings visitors through the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in groups of up to 12 people. The tour departs at 9.00 am daily and features Samsung Gear VR glasses, accompanied with an authorized guide registered with Evolved Guide –the first online booking system for tour guides. A technical assistant will also be present that will offer users support in how to use the equipment. At the end of the tour after selfies and group photos, a guide will accompany the visitors to the ground floor where they can stand exactly where the action took place and enjoy the virtual stage. The underground tour is not typically offered with traditional tours, therefore giving tourists a unique experience.
Wearing the VR glasses, the visitors will immerse themselves in the various corridors, meeting slaves who silently move to prepare and coordinate all necessary equipment for the spectacle, and the gladiators themselves preparing their weapons for battle. They can admire the detailed reconstruction of historical hoists that are normally invisible to visitors which were used by Domiziano in Macrino (end of the first century AD-III) and utilized to project the bevel on the arena to display hunting performances. The visit will then follow with access to the Roman Forum and Palatine.
The project has been funded by the Lazio Region and has acquired more than a year of work among historians, assistance and 3D game programmers.
The immersion permits visitors to recall 90% of their experience as opposed to the usual 20% of a generic tour, which allows tourists the ability to take home amazing memories, and giving them an unforgettable experience.
